Winemaker & Technical Department Manager, Grandes Vinos
Winemaking is a team effort that starts in the vineyard until the wine is bottled and shipped. Leading the Grandes Vinos Technical Department is winemaker David Castillo.
David was born in the town of Alfaro in La Rioja, Spain. David embodies the tradition of Spanish winemaking, being the latest generation in his family to cultivate vineyards and make wine. He was introduced to wine culture at a very young age and chose to study Agricultural Engineering at the University of Navarre, followed by oenology from the University of La Rioja.
David’s experience includes work at wineries in top Spanish regions La Rioja, Navarra and Aragon, as well as in the French appellations of Bordeaux Superieur and St. Emilion.
“I am excited to be a part of the discovery and growth of Cariñena. It has a rich history that includes being the cradle of both the Garnacha and Cariñena grape, and yet the modern momentum of a region that is evolving. I see it gaining a reputation as one of the largest international wine regions in the world in the next few years. The climate, soil, and tradition of the area makes Cariñena a very extraordinary place. Grandes Vinos is leading the way, prioritizing native varieties and crafting them with a modern concept.”
